How to Tune a Baritone Guitar (B, A and C Standard Explained)

A baritone is not an extended-range guitar — it is six strings, the same shapes, and a longer neck. Why scale length rather than string count is the whole point, how to pick between B, A and C standard, and what a detuned regular guitar can and cannot copy.

The most useful thing to know about a baritone guitar is what it isn’t. It is not an extended-range instrument — there is no extra string. It has six strings, tuned in exactly the same pattern of intervals as any guitar, and every chord shape you know works untouched. The entire difference is scale length: roughly 26.5 to 30.5 inches against a standard guitar’s 25.5. That extra length is what lets all six strings sit a fourth or a fifth lower and still sound tight instead of slack.

The three common tunings

All three lower every string by the same interval, so all three preserve your fingering completely. What differs is how far down you go — and, critically, what scale length and string gauge each one wants.

B standard is the default and what most baritones are sold set up for. C standard is the shallowest drop and the most forgiving on a shorter baritone scale. A standard goes deepest and genuinely wants length behind it — on a 26.5-inch neck it starts running into the same slackness problem that sends people to baritones in the first place.

Why detuning a regular guitar isn’t the same thing

You can tune a standard guitar to B standard. The pitches will be correct and this tuner will confirm it. What you will not get is the sound, and the reason is tension: a 25.5-inch string at B1 on normal gauges goes slack, and slack strings fail in specific ways — the note reads as muddy and undefined rather than deep, intonation drifts, fretted notes buzz, and picking hard bends the pitch sharp on the attack.

There is a genuinely counterintuitive part here. What a longer scale really protects when you tune low is the high end of the tone, not the low end. Everyone expects a baritone to deliver more bass; what it actually delivers is enough treble and attack for a low note to read as a distinct pitch instead of a rumble. That clarity — not depth — is what a detuned standard-scale guitar loses first, and it is the thing heavier strings only partly restore.

Strings: pick the tuning first

The most common baritone setup mistake is treating a baritone set as one thing. Sets are built for a target tuning, and mismatching them undoes the point of the instrument: a set gauged for B standard, tuned down to A, goes slack and gives you back the exact problem you bought a baritone to avoid. A set gauged for A standard, tuned up to B, runs stiff and puts more tension through the neck than the setup expects.

Changing between them is not a drop-in swap either. A meaningful gauge change alters total neck tension, which means truss rod, saddle intonation and nut slots all want checking afterwards — routine setup work, just more consequential here because baritone gauges are heavy to begin with and the low string is very heavy indeed.

Tuning routine

  1. Confirm which tuning your set was gauged for before touching a peg. This is the step that actually matters, and the tuner cannot tell you — a slack string reads as perfectly in tune.
  2. Tune low to high, then repeat. Heavy strings shift the neck as they come up to pitch, so one pass is rarely enough.
  3. Read the sustain on the lowest string. B1 at 61.74 Hz — and A1 at 55 Hz more so — needs a moment before the reading is trustworthy, and a hard pick will read sharp initially.
  4. Check intonation at the 12th fret against the open harmonic, at least on the lowest and highest strings. Long scales and heavy strings make intonation errors more audible, not less.
  5. If you play with others, work out your transposition offset — a fourth for B standard, a fifth for A, a major third for C — before the first rehearsal rather than during it.

Frequently asked questions

If the chord shapes are the same, do I have to transpose when playing with other people?

Yes — in practice a baritone is a transposing instrument, and this trips up more players than the tuning ever does. In B standard every string sits a perfect fourth below standard tuning, so the shape you think of as G sounds a D, and the shape you call E minor sounds B minor. Nothing about your fingers changes, but the chord name in your head is no longer the chord name in the room. Either learn the offset for your tuning or write parts in sounding pitch; the arguments happen when one player is naming shapes and another is naming pitches.

Can I put baritone strings on a regular guitar to get the same thing?

You will get closer, and you still will not get a baritone. Heavier strings restore some of the tension a 25.5-inch scale loses at these pitches, which genuinely helps — but there are limits: very heavy gauges may not fit the nut slots without filing, the added pull needs truss-rod compensation, and the tone still lacks the definition a long scale gives. It is a reasonable experiment before committing to another guitar, and a poor substitute for one if you intend to live in these tunings.

Is a baritone guitar the same as a Bass VI?

No, though they are frequently confused. A Bass VI is a six-string instrument tuned a full octave below a standard guitar — E1 to E3 — on a scale usually around 30 inches, which puts it in genuine bass territory played with guitar-style fingering. A baritone sits between a guitar and that: typically a fourth or fifth down rather than a full octave, on a 26.5- to 30.5-inch scale, and it is still fundamentally a guitar in role and voicing rather than a bass.

Why do baritone strings feel stiffer than my regular guitar even at lower pitch?

Because gauge and scale length both push in the stiffness direction at once. Baritone sets are meaningfully heavier than standard sets — .013–.062 is typical where a regular guitar might be .010–.046 — and the longer scale means more of the string is under tension between nut and bridge. The result is often more perceived stiffness than a standard-scale guitar in standard tuning, despite the lower pitch. Bends in particular take noticeably more effort, which is one reason many players use lighter top strings than a full baritone set provides.
