Six open strings are the whole instrument
A lap steel has no frets. The printed lines on the fingerboard are position markers, not stops — the bar decides the pitch, and it decides it continuously. Which means the six open strings are not a starting point you build fingerings on top of. They are the instrument, transposed up and down by a piece of metal.
That changes what tuning means here. On a guitar, standard tuning is a near-universal default and everything else is an alternate. On a lap steel there is no default: the tuning is chosen for the music, the string set is gauged to match it, and changing tuning is a restringing job rather than a few turns of the pegs.
C6 — C3–E3–G3–A3–C4–E4 — is the most common modern choice, and the reason is the added sixth. Those six notes contain a C major chord and an A minor seventh at once, so a single straight bar position offers several usable chords depending on which strings you sound. That is why it dominates western swing, jazz and country steel, where the instrument has to supply harmony rather than just a wail.
Three tunings a lap steel actually gets strung for. Note how far apart their bottom strings sit — C3 against G2 against D3 — which is why one string set cannot serve all three.
Why you cannot just retune between them
The gaps are larger than the chord names suggest. C6’s low string is C3 at 130.81 Hz; open G’s is G2 at 98.00 Hz — a fourth lower. Take a set gauged for open G up to C6 and the bottom strings arrive tight and thin; take a C6 set down to open G and they flap.
Neither outcome is a tuning problem you can adjust your way out of. A string held far from its design tension will not sustain properly under a bar, and a slack one buzzes against the pickup and refuses to hold pitch. Steel players end up owning multiple instruments — or at least multiple necks — for exactly this reason, and it is worth knowing before you decide your lap steel “won’t stay in tune”.
Tuning routine
- Decide which tuning the instrument is strung for before you turn anything. If you inherited it, check the gauges against the chord you are aiming at rather than assuming.
- Tune from the low string up, watching the octave digit. Several of these tunings repeat note names across octaves — C6 has two Cs and two Es — and the display is the only thing that distinguishes them.
- Approach every string from below. Come up to pitch, not down to it, so the machine head and the string are both loaded in the same direction.
- Check the octave pairs against each other by ear. In C6 the 6th and 2nd strings are both C, and the 5th and 1st are both E. Play each pair — they should sound like one note in two registers.
- Strum all six open and listen to the chord. This is the real test on an open-tuned instrument: every string can read centred while the chord still sounds sour, because a chord is judged by its intervals rather than by six independent readings.
- Then check yourself, not the instrument. Put the bar directly over a marker line — over it, not behind it — and play the same chord. If it goes out, that is bar placement, and no amount of tuning will fix it.
What the needle can and cannot settle
The dial handles the open strings, and on this instrument that is a bigger share of the job than usual — get them wrong and there is no fretwork to disguise it.
What it cannot help with is the thing steel players actually spend their time on: a bar placed by ear against a chord. Equal temperament is a compromise designed for instruments with fixed pitches, and a lap steel has none — so a player sliding into a major third will naturally place it lower than the grid says, because that is where it locks. What tuning should a lap steel be in?
There is no single answer, and that is genuinely different from a guitar. A lap steel is tuned to whatever the music needs, and the six open strings are the instrument — there are no frets to give you the notes in between. C6 (C–E–G–A–C–E) is the most common modern choice because those six notes contain both major and minor shapes under one straight bar, which is why it dominates in western swing, jazz and country. Open G and open D are the blues and slide-tradition tunings. E7 and A6 have their own followings. Pick one, string for it, and learn it before changing.
Can I retune my lap steel from C6 to open G without changing strings?
Not well. A string set is gauged for a specific tuning, and the gap between these two is bigger than it looks: the low C of C6 is a whole tone above the low B of an open-G set, and the top strings move in the other direction. Strings taken far from their design pitch either go slack and buzz or run tight and break, and either way they will not intonate cleanly under a bar. If you want to work in two tunings regularly, the honest answers are two string sets or two instruments — which is why so many steel players own several.
Why does my lap steel sound out of tune even when every open string reads centred?
Almost always the bar. There are no frets on a lap steel, so pitch is wherever you put the bar and nowhere else — hold it a millimetre behind the fret marker and the note is flat, tilt it and the strings under it disagree with each other. Fret markers on a lap steel are printed lines, not physical stops, and the bar must sit directly over the line rather than behind it. If open strings read perfectly and fretted chords sound sour, the instrument is fine and your bar hand is the variable.
What does the 6 in C6 mean?
The added sixth. A plain C major chord is C–E–G; C6 adds an A on top of that, and the tuning spells C–E–G–A–C–E across the six strings. That extra note is what makes the tuning so useful under a straight bar: the same six open strings contain a C major chord, an A minor seventh, and a handful of other shapes depending on which three or four strings you sound. Does a lap steel need intonation adjustment like a guitar?
No, and it is one of the few stringed instruments where that is true. Intonation compensation exists because pressing a string down to a fret stretches it slightly sharp, so guitar saddles are staggered to correct for it. A bar does not press the string down — it stops it at a point without stretching it — so there is nothing to compensate. The bridge on a lap steel is usually a straight bar for exactly that reason. What you get instead is total responsibility for pitch: no frets means no help, but also no built-in error.
