One reed, a conical bore, and a register that jumps a clean octave

A saxophone is a transposing, single-reed instrument with a conical bore — and that second fact is what separates it acoustically from its closest relative, the clarinet. A conical tube open at both ends (the reed end included, acoustically) supports every harmonic, not just the odd ones, so pressing the octave key does exactly what the name says: the same fingering speaks a clean octave higher, not the twelfth a clarinet's cylindrical bore forces. What doesn't change from the clarinet is the transposition — every saxophone reads in treble clef but sounds somewhere else entirely, and by a different interval depending on its size.

Where the pitch actually comes from

The mouthpiece on the neck cork is the saxophone's one true tuning slide. Pushing it in shortens the effective tube and sharpens the whole instrument; pulling it out lengthens the tube and flattens it. It's set once before playing, checked against the standard tuning note — written G4 on alto and baritone, written C5 on soprano and tenor — and left alone; every other note is then the reed, the mouthpiece and the player's job.

Reed strength, mouthpiece facing and embouchure do the rest, note by note. A softer reed responds more easily but tends to read a little sharp under normal pressure; a harder reed takes more air support but sits more stable. Biting down — pinching the reed with the jaw instead of supporting it with air — is the single most common way a note reads sharp that has nothing to do with the mouthpiece position at all, and it's the first thing worth ruling out before touching the cork.

Tuning routine, step by step

  1. Warm the instrument through first. A cold horn plays flat — pitch follows the temperature of the air column and the reed, not the metal around it — so play for a few minutes before trusting any reading.
  2. Play the standard tuning note at a normal mezzo-forte — written G4 on alto or baritone, written C5 on soprano or tenor, all landing on concert B♭. Correct any offset with the mouthpiece: sharp, pull out; flat, push in, a millimetre at a time.
  3. Check the octave-key version of the same note. If the upper octave reads noticeably sharp or flat relative to the lower one even though the mouthpiece is set correctly, that's a voicing and support issue, not a mouthpiece-position one — see the callout below.
  4. Check the palm keys and altissimo separately. The highest notes on the horn run sharp far more easily than the middle register, driven by tight voicing under pressure — correcting them is an air and throat-shape adjustment, not another pass at the cork.
  5. Finish by playing, not holding notes. A long tone tells you where the instrument sits at rest; a scale or a phrase tells you where your own embouchure habitually pulls it, which is the correction that actually matters in performance.

The saxophone family: switching horns, not retuning one

This page's reference tones are built around the alto, the most common starting horn, but the same mouthpiece-then-reed-then-air routine applies to every size — only the transposition and the physical scale change. The soprano, pitched in B♭ like a clarinet, sounds a plain major second below written and plays its tuning note on written C5. The tenor, also B♭ but an octave lower, sounds a major ninth below written — its tuning note is written C5 too, and it lands on the identical concert pitch as the alto's written G4. The baritone, an E♭ horn an octave below the alto, sounds a major thirteenth below written and tunes on written G4. All four are tuned exactly the way this page describes — mouthpiece first, then reed and embouchure — just at a different transposition and a different size.

Equal temperament vs. what a good ear actually does

Like a clarinet or a trombone, a saxophone has no fixed pitch of its own — reed, mouthpiece and embouchure bend every note far enough that "in tune" against this equal-tempered dial and "in tune" against the chord you're actually playing in are two different targets. A major third locked to the ensemble sits roughly 14 cents below where this tuner calls it centred; a perfect fifth sits about 2 cents above. Chasing a perfectly centred needle on a sustained chord tone fights the ensemble rather than blending with it.

The practical split: use this tuner to set the mouthpiece and to map your own palm-key and altissimo tendencies, where a fixed, objective grid is exactly the right tool. Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't the note this tuner names match what's printed on my part?

Because every saxophone transposes, and by a different amount depending on its size. An alto (E♭) sounds a major sixth below written; a tenor (B♭) sounds a major ninth — an octave and a step — below written; a soprano (B♭) sounds a plain major second below written, same as a B♭ clarinet. This tuner always names the concert pitch actually in the air, never the written name. One neat consequence: an alto’s written G4 and a tenor’s written C5, the standard tuning notes on each horn, land on the exact same concert pitch — B♭3, 233.08 Hz.

How far should the mouthpiece sit on the neck cork, and what if pushing it in all the way still reads flat?

Roughly halfway is normal on a fresh cork with a stock mouthpiece — that leaves room to correct in either direction as reeds, temperature and mouthpieces change. If you’re already pushed in as far as it goes and still reading flat, stop pushing: you’ve run out of adjustment, and the fix is a new reed, a different mouthpiece, or a worn cork built back up, not more force. A cork that’s slipping instead of holding position needs cork grease or a slightly thicker replacement, not a tighter squeeze.

My octave-key notes crack down an octave instead of jumping up cleanly. Is that a tuning problem?

No — leave the mouthpiece alone. The octave key opens a small vent that forces the air column to favor its second harmonic instead of its first; if that note honks down an octave rather than speaking cleanly, the cause is almost always weak air support or a loose embouchure failing to lock onto the upper harmonic, or on an older horn, a worn octave pad or a sticky mechanical linkage not opening the vent fully. None of that is something a mouthpiece adjustment fixes.

Does this work for soprano, tenor and baritone too, or just alto?

Yes — the tuner only ever listens to the pitch actually coming out of the bell, so it reads identically no matter which saxophone produced it. What changes is the transposition you do in your head to relate the reading back to your part, and which written note you play to reach concert B♭: written C for soprano and tenor, written G for alto and baritone.
