Six strings, same shapes, a longer neck
A baritone guitar is not an extended-range instrument — that is the single most useful thing to understand about it. It has six strings, tuned in exactly the same pattern of intervals as a standard guitar. What differs is scale length: a standard guitar is around 25.5 inches, a baritone roughly 26.5 to 30.5 inches. That extra length is what lets all six strings sit a fourth or a fifth lower while still carrying enough tension to sound tight and intonate properly.
Because every string moves by the same interval, nothing you know changes. In B standard each string is a perfect fourth below where it would be in standard tuning; every chord shape, scale and riff transfers untouched and simply sounds a fourth lower. The fingering that produced a G chord still produces the same shape — it just sounds a D.
B standard is the most common and pairs with a 27-inch scale; A standard goes a fifth down and generally wants 28 inches or more; C standard is the shallowest. Pick the tuning your strings were gauged for.
Why you can’t just detune a standard guitar
You can reach these pitches on a normal guitar. You will not get a baritone. The reason is tension: a 25.5-inch string tuned down to B1 goes slack, and slack strings misbehave in specific, recognisable ways — the note sounds muddy and undefined rather than deep, intonation wanders, fretted notes buzz, and picking hard bends the pitch sharp on the attack. A longer scale carries the same pitch at higher tension, which is what keeps the note tight and clear.
There is a counterintuitive part worth knowing: what a longer scale really preserves when you go low is the high end of the tone, not the low end. A detuned standard-scale guitar loses definition and articulation — the attack goes soft and the notes blur together. A baritone keeps the treble content that makes a low note read as a distinct pitch rather than a rumble. Heavier strings on a standard guitar recover some tension, but you are compensating for a short scale rather than matching a long one.
Strings: choose the tuning first, then gauge for it
Baritone sets are built around a target tuning, and the wrong pairing is the most common setup mistake. Sets in the .013–.062 range are typical for B standard; going down to A standard or a drop tuning generally calls for something heavier, around .014–.068. A set gauged for B standard tuned down to A will feel slack and lose the tightness you bought the baritone for; a set gauged for A standard tuned up to B will feel stiff and put more tension through the neck than it was set up for.
Changing gauge is not a drop-in swap. A meaningfully different string set changes total neck tension, which usually means the truss rod, saddle intonation and nut slots all need attention afterwards — the same setup work any large gauge change requires, just more consequential here because baritone gauges are heavy to begin with.
Tuning routine, step by step
- Confirm which tuning your strings are gauged for before you start. Tuning a B-standard set down to A standard will read perfectly in tune on this dial and still feel and sound wrong.
- Tune low to high, then repeat. Baritone strings are heavy and shift the neck as they come to pitch, so a single pass is rarely enough.
- Read the sustain on the lowest string, not the attack. B1 at 61.74 Hz — and A1 at 55 Hz still more so — takes a moment to settle before the reading is trustworthy.
- Check intonation at the 12th fret against the open harmonic on at least the lowest and highest strings. Heavy strings and long scales make intonation errors more audible, not less.
- Remember what the tuner is telling you. It confirms pitch, not setup — a slack string reads as in tune right up until you play a chord on it.
