How to Tune a 7-String Guitar (B Standard, Drop A, and the Floppy Low B)

B standard is just E standard with a low B underneath — every chord shape you know still works. The full tuning routine, Drop A, and an honest fix for the one real problem: a low B that flutters in pitch because of gauge and scale length, not tuning.

Tuning a 7-string is mostly tuning a six-string. B standard — B1–E2–A2–D3–G3–B3–E4 — is standard E tuning with a low B added a perfect fourth beneath the low E, and the six upper strings are the identical pitches you already play. Every chord shape, scale and song transfers untouched. All the genuinely new material lives on one string, and almost none of it is about tuning at all: it is about gauge, scale length and setup. That is what this guide is really about.

Why B standard, and not something more exotic

A 7-string could have been tuned any number of ways, and the reason B standard won is that it is purely additive. The interval between the new low B and the low E above it is a perfect fourth — the same interval that separates E from A, A from D, and D from G. Nothing is rearranged; the existing pattern simply continues one string further down. A guitarist picking up a 7-string for the first time can already play it, and any riff that lived on the low E can be moved down a string with the same fingering.

The floppy low B, and what actually causes it

The single most common complaint from players moving up from six strings is that the low B feels and sounds loose — the note wavers in pitch when picked hard, sounds undefined rather than deep, and refuses to intonate cleanly. It is worth being blunt about this: it is not a tuning problem. A tuner will read the string as sitting exactly on B1, and that reading will be true while the string still sounds wrong.

What is really happening is insufficient tension. Two things determine it:

Treat those as starting points rather than rules — string brands vary in tension at the same nominal gauge, and personal preference genuinely differs. The useful principle is the relationship: shorter scale wants heavier string, and the .056 that ships on many factory sets is light for a low B on any of these scales.

What changes when you change gauge

Going up in gauge on the low B is the right fix, but it is not a drop-in swap — a heavier string pulls harder, and three things downstream may need attention.

Intonation is the one you will notice first. A thicker string has to stretch further to reach the fret, which pushes fretted notes sharp; if the open B is perfect but chords up the neck sound sour, the saddle needs to move back. Check it the standard way: compare the 12th-fret harmonic with the fretted note at the 12th, and adjust until they match.

The nut slot is the one that gets missed. If a heavier string does not sit down cleanly in its slot, it binds while you tune and then slips — which presents as a guitar that will not hold tuning, often with an audible click. A slot widened by a luthier is a small job; forcing the string in is not a solution.

The truss rod matters if you change several strings at once rather than one. More total tension pulls more relief into the neck, and a neck that has bowed forward buzzes and plays sharp in the middle of the fretboard.

Tuning routine

  1. Tune the six upper strings first, exactly as a normal guitar. They settle fastest and they are the reference for everything else.
  2. Tune the low B last, because it is the heaviest string and moves the neck most — doing it first guarantees re-doing the others.
  3. Read the sustain of the low B, not the attack. At 61.74 Hz the first fraction of a second after the pick is genuinely unstable, and picking hard bends the pitch sharp momentarily.
  4. Do a full second pass. On a seven-string this is necessary rather than fussy — the first pass changes total neck tension enough to move what you already tuned.
  5. Check intonation on the low B at the 12th fret against its harmonic, especially after any string change.

Drop A, and where it helps or hurts

Drop A lowers only the seventh string a whole step to A1 (55 Hz), leaving the other six untouched — exactly the relationship Drop D has to standard tuning on a six-string, with the same payoff of a one-finger power chord on the lowest string.

Frequently asked questions

What gauge should my low B actually be?

It depends on scale length, which is why a single number gets quoted badly so often. On a 25.5-inch scale you generally want something in the .062–.068 range to get a low B feeling comparable to the other six strings; at 26.5 to 27 inches you can come down to roughly .059–.064 for the same feel, because the extra length is doing part of the work. The .056 that ships on many factory 7-string sets is the common culprit behind a low B that feels loose next to the rest of the set — it is a perfectly good string, just light for that pitch on a short neck.

Why does my low B fret sharp even though the open string is perfectly in tune?

That is intonation, and thick strings show it worse than thin ones. A string has to stretch slightly to reach the fret, which raises its pitch; the thicker and stiffer the string, the more that stretch matters, so the low B on a 7-string is the string most likely to play sharp up the neck while reading perfectly at the open position. The fix is moving the saddle back to lengthen the string slightly — standard intonation setup — not retuning. If you have just moved to a heavier low B, expect to redo intonation on that string.

Do I need a new nut if I go up in gauge on the low B?

Possibly, and it is worth checking before you blame anything else. If a heavier string doesn’t drop cleanly into the nut slot, it will sit high, bind as you tune, and ping sharp when it finally slips — which reads as a guitar that won’t hold tuning. The tell is a string that goes out of tune after bends or hard playing but reads fine when you retune it, often with an audible click from the nut. A luthier widening that one slot is a small job; forcing a string into a slot that is too narrow is not a fix.

Is a 7-string harder to keep in tune than a six-string?

Slightly, and for a mechanical reason rather than anything mysterious. Seven strings put meaningfully more total tension on the neck than six, so the instrument is more sensitive to the order you tune in — tuning the heavy low B after the others will pull the lighter strings flat, and tuning it first means re-doing everything else. A full second pass is genuinely necessary rather than optional. Beyond that, the top six behave exactly like a normal guitar.
