Autoharp Tuner

Thirty-six strings and one wrench

A standard autoharp has 36 strings spanning roughly F2 to C6 — about three and a half octaves — each with its own pin, each tuned individually with a wrench. There is no clever shortcut. What separates an hour of frustration from twenty efficient minutes is having a method before you start.

Two things make an autoharp harder to tune than its simplicity suggests, and neither is obvious until you try. The first is that you cannot easily hear one string alone. The second is that the instrument is not as chromatic as you probably assume.

The damping problem

An autoharp is an open box with three dozen strings under tension and no dampers except the chord-bar felts. Pluck one string and its neighbours ring in sympathy — which is lovely when you are playing and ruinous when you are measuring, because the tuner is offered several notes at once and will name whichever is loudest at that moment.

The solution is your other hand. Rest it flat across the strings either side of the one you are tuning, leaving only that string free to sound, and pluck near the bridge where the felts are out of the way. On most instruments damping is a refinement; on an autoharp it is the technique, and without it the readings simply are not trustworthy.

Where the instrument stops being chromatic

This surprises people who arrive from a keyboard. A standard 36-string autoharp is not fully chromatic across its whole range, and it was never intended to be — a genuinely chromatic instrument over the same span would need around 44 strings.

Instead the lowest octaves carry only the notes the chord bars actually need, and complete chromatic coverage begins higher up, from around A3. So if a chart sends you looking for a low accidental that is simply not there, the chart is assuming twelve notes per octave and your instrument was built on a different principle.

Practical consequence when tuning: work from a note map of your instrument rather than from a generic chromatic sequence. Write out what your autoharp actually has, once, and keep it with the wrench.

A method that works

  1. Leave the chord bars in place. Tune the instrument in the state it plays in; lifting the bar assembly changes how everything is loaded.
  2. Work in one direction, low to high, and do not skip about. Thirty-six strings is a lot to keep track of, and jumping around is how you end up tuning one string twice and another not at all.
  3. Damp with your free hand for every single string. No exceptions — this is the step that makes the readings mean anything.
  4. Watch the octave digit, not just the letter. With three and a half octaves in front of you, every letter appears three or four times, and a string tuned to the right letter in the wrong octave is a genuinely easy mistake.
  5. Move pins in small increments. Autoharp pins are geared far more directly than guitar machine heads — a small turn is a large pitch change, and overshooting repeatedly wears the pin block.
  6. Do a complete second pass. Thirty-six strings is enough total tension that the instrument settles as you work, and the strings you tuned first will have moved by the time you reach the last. The second pass is fast because most strings will already be right.

When it is not a tuning problem

Two faults present as tuning trouble on an autoharp and are not.

A string that sounds choked or muted no matter how you pluck it is usually a chord-bar felt sitting too low and touching the string at rest. That is a setup adjustment, not a peg turn. And a string that will not hold its pitch — drifting flat within minutes while its neighbours stay put — is generally a pin that has lost its grip in the block, or a string at the end of its life. Neither is fixed by tuning it again more carefully.

What the needle can and cannot settle

On an instrument with thirty-six independently tuned strings and no frets, a chromatic tuner is doing genuinely useful work: every string is a fixed pitch, and every one of them needs to be right. There is far less ear-work here than on a coursed instrument.

Where it stops helping is the whole-instrument impression. An autoharp is played as chords — the bars mute everything except the notes of the chord you have chosen — so what you hear is always several strings at once, and equal temperament’s compromises are audible in a strummed chord in a way they are not in a single note. Tune every string to the grid, because that is what a chord-bar instrument requires; then judge the result by strumming rather than by reading. What tool do I need?

A tuning wrench, sometimes called a key — the same square-socket tool a piano or harp technician uses, sized for autoharp pins. This is not a job for pliers. Autoharp pins are set in a wooden pin block and a badly fitting tool will round the pin off, which is a repair rather than an inconvenience. Beyond the wrench you need something to damp with, which is your other hand, and a chromatic tuner that shows the octave, because thirty-six strings mean the same letter recurs three or four times.

Should I tune with the chord bars on or off?

On, in their normal resting position, because that is the state the instrument plays in. The bars sit above the strings with felts that mute selected strings when pressed, and lifting the assembly changes how the whole instrument is loaded. Tune with everything as it normally sits, pluck each string individually near the bridge where the felts are not in the way, and damp with your free hand. If a string sounds choked no matter how you pluck it, that is a felt sitting too low, which is a setup issue rather than a tuning one.
