Same fingering, five different pitches
Every saxophone tunes to concert B♭, and every saxophone reaches it with a different note on the page. Alto and baritone players finger written G; soprano, tenor and bass players finger written C. That is one sound the band agrees on, arrived at from three different octaves and two different written notes.
So the fingerings carry over between horns and the pitches do not. Pick yours below — every tone is the concert pitch actually in the air, with the written note that produces it in the label.

Which sax, which tuning note?
The whole family shares one fingering system and one written range — B♭3 to F6 — so swapping horns changes the transposition and the size, not what your fingers do. This is the table to keep if you double:

Read the alto and tenor rows together: an alto’s written G and a tenor’s written C are the identical concert pitch, B♭3. Two players fingering completely different notes, tuning to the same sound. That is what makes a section tune quickly once everyone knows it, and what causes the most confusion when they don’t.
The routine
- Warm the instrument through first. A cold horn plays flat — pitch follows the temperature of the air column and the reed, not the metal around it.
- Play your tuning note, mezzo-forte. The highlighted row above. Sharp, pull the mouthpiece out; flat, push it in, a millimetre at a time.
- Check the same note with the embouchure relaxed versus firm. If the reading swings noticeably between the two, that gap is exactly how much your embouchure is currently adding on top of wherever the mouthpiece sits — worth knowing before you blame the horn for anything.
- Check the octave-key version of the same note.A conical bore overblows a clean octave, so it should land exactly an octave up. If it doesn’t, that is voicing and air support, not mouthpiece position.
- Check the palm keys separately. The top of the horn runs sharp far more easily than the middle, driven by tight voicing under pressure.
- Finish by playing, not holding notes. A long tone tells you where the horn sits at rest; a phrase tells you where your embouchure pulls it, which is the correction that matters in performance.
The mouthpiece is the only tuning slide — everything else is you
Pushing the mouthpiece onto the cork shortens the tube and sharpens the horn; pulling it out flattens it. Set it once against your tuning note and leave it. Everything after that is reed, facing and embouchure: a softer reed reads a little sharp under normal pressure, a harder one sits more stable, and biting — pinching the reed with the jaw instead of supporting it with air — is the single most common reason a note reads sharp for reasons that have nothing to do with the cork.
The palm keys are where that bites hardest. Written D6 upward needs tight voicing to speak at all, and tight voicing runs sharp — so the top of the horn drifts sharp under pressure while the middle sits centred. Reeds: strength, and soak it first
Reeds are graded on a strength scale, roughly 1 (softest) through 5 (hardest), sold in halves. A softer reed responds with less air, which makes it forgiving for a developing embouchure, but it tends to read a touch sharp and brighter under normal pressure. A harder reed needs more consistent air support to speak at all, and rewards it with a steadier, darker, more centred pitch. Most players work from soft toward harder over months and years as their air support develops, not in one practice session.
One step changes pitch as much as strength does: soak the reed before you play. A dry reed is stiff and unpredictable — wet it in your mouth or a small cup of water for a minute or two before your tuning note means anything. A reed straight out of the box will almost always read differently five minutes later once it has wetted through.
Equal temperament vs. playing in a section
Every electronic tuner, this one included, measures against equal temperament— twelve equal steps to the octave. A saxophone section blending chords by ear does something different: a major third tends to settle roughly 14 cents below where an equal-tempered tuner calls it centred, and a perfect fifth about 2 cents above, so the chord locks and stops beating. Use the tuner to set the mouthpiece and to learn your own horn’s tendencies note by note; once you are inside a chord with other players, let your ear take over.

What note does a saxophone tune to?
Concert B♭ — but the fingering differs by horn. Alto and baritone players finger written G4; soprano and tenor players finger written C5. That comes out as B♭3 (233.08 Hz) on an alto or tenor, B♭4 (466.16 Hz) on a soprano and B♭2 (116.54 Hz) on a baritone. Play it at a normal mezzo-forte on a warmed-up horn and correct any offset by moving the mouthpiece on the neck cork: sharp, pull out; flat, push in.
Why doesn't the note this tuner names match what's printed on my part?
Because every saxophone transposes, and by a different amount depending on its size. An alto (E♭) sounds a major sixth below written; a tenor (B♭) sounds a major ninth — an octave and a step — below written; a soprano (B♭) sounds a plain major second below written, same as a B♭ clarinet. One neat consequence: an alto’s written G4 and a tenor’s written C5, the standard tuning notes on each horn, land on the exact same concert pitch — B♭3, 233.08 Hz.
Does this work for soprano, tenor, baritone and bass sax too, or just alto?
Yes — the tuner only ever listens to the pitch actually coming out of the bell, so it reads identically no matter which saxophone produced it. What changes is which written note you play to reach concert B♭: written C for soprano, tenor and bass, written G for alto and baritone. How far should the mouthpiece sit on the neck cork, and what if pushing it in all the way still reads flat?
Roughly halfway is normal on a fresh cork with a stock mouthpiece — that leaves room to correct in either direction as reeds, temperature and mouthpieces change. If you’re already pushed in as far as it goes and still reading flat, stop pushing: you’ve run out of adjustment, and the fix is a new reed, a different mouthpiece, or a worn cork built back up, not more force.
My octave-key notes crack down an octave instead of jumping up cleanly. Is that a tuning problem?
No — leave the mouthpiece alone. The octave key opens a small vent that pushes the air column onto its second harmonic; if the note honks down instead, the cause is almost always weak air support or a loose embouchure failing to lock onto the upper harmonic, or on an older horn a worn octave pad or sticky linkage not opening the vent fully. None of that is something a mouthpiece adjustment fixes.
What reed strength should a beginner start on?
Most beginners start around a 2 or 2.5 on the 1 (softest) to 5 (hardest) scale — soft enough to respond without much air support while the embouchure is still developing. As breath support and lip control build, most players work up to somewhere in the 2.5–3.5 range over their first year or two, and jazz players often settle harder still. There is no universally correct strength; it depends on your mouthpiece, your embouchure and the sound you are chasing.
Why does my saxophone read sharp when I am nervous or my chops are tired?
Because both nerves and fatigue tend to produce the same physical response: extra jaw and lip pressure clamping onto the reed. A pinched reed vibrates faster, which reads as sharp, and it happens independently of where your mouthpiece is set — no amount of pulling the mouthpiece out fixes a bite. The tell is inconsistency: your first notes of a rehearsal read differently from your last, or a nerve-wracking passage reads sharper than a relaxed one, with nothing on the horn moved.
How do I know whether a pitch problem is the horn or me?
Play the same note two ways and compare. If a note is consistently off however you approach it — same fingering, relaxed embouchure, full air support, soft and loud — suspect the horn: a leaking pad, a loose octave mechanism, or a mouthpiece and reed combination that does not suit that instrument. If the same note reads differently depending on how you played it — tense versus relaxed, tired versus fresh, loud versus soft — that is embouchure and air, and it is fixed with practice rather than a repair shop visit.
Do I need to retune every time I switch reeds or mouthpieces?
Check the tuning note whenever you switch either one — a fresh reed of the same stated strength can play noticeably sharper or flatter than the one it replaced, and a different mouthpiece changes the air column itself. You do not need to retune mid-reed, though: a reed that has settled in over its first hour of playing holds its pitch tendency for the rest of that session.
