There is nothing on this instrument to tune

A ney is a length of reed with six finger holes and a thumb hole cut into it. No peg, no slide, no cork, no barrel joint, no tuning screw, no adjustable anything. Its pitch was decided when the reed was cut and it cannot be changed. That is not an omission from this page; it is the fact the page is about.

So a ney player does not tune. A ney player owns several and picks one — Turkish players by ahenk, the transposition level named after the ney’s length; Arabic players by the note the instrument sounds. Choosing the instrument is the tuning step, and it happens before you leave the house.

Which leaves a chromatic dial two jobs that are genuinely worth doing, and this page is about those.

Job one: find out which ney you have

This is the most useful thing a tuner does for a ney player, and it takes ten seconds. Cover every hole, sound the lowest note you can get, and read the dial. That pitch identifies the instrument. It is worth doing on any ney you have inherited, bought secondhand, or been handed at a lesson, and worth writing on a label.

Two things to be careful of while you do it. The low register of a ney is the hardest part of the instrument to sound at all — a beginner will often get the octave above instead without realising, so check the octave number the dial reports and not just the letter. And take the reading from a note you can hold steady for two or three seconds; a note that is still settling will read anywhere.

Ahenk: why the ney sets the pitch for everyone else

Turkish art music is written at a fixed nominal pitch — the degree called rast is written as G — and it sounds at whatever level the ney in the room dictates. The logic is straightforward once stated: every other instrument in a Turkish ensemble can be retuned or refretted, and the ney cannot, so the ney wins. An ensemble does not transpose a piece. It picks an ahenk, and everybody follows.

The levels are named after ney lengths. The common ones, longest and lowest last:

Job two: measuring what your lip is doing

On most instruments the pitch of a fingering is a property of the instrument and your job is to not disturb it. On a ney it is the opposite. The reed is held at an angle against the lip, and rolling it in or out moves the pitch by well over a semitone on the same fingering. That is not a flaw to be trained out. It is the mechanism: the neutral intervals of the makam — the ones that sit between the notes of a keyboard — are produced exactly this way, by lip and by half-covering holes, because there is no other way to produce them on a tube with seven holes in it.

Which makes the cents readout the right tool and the note name the wrong one. Useful things to do with it:

  • Hold one note for five seconds and watch the spread.A beginner’s reading wanders across thirty or forty cents; a controlled one sits still. The width of the wander is a measurement of your embouchure, and it is the number that improves with practice.
  • Check the same fingering in both registers. A ney overblows to the octave and beyond, and the upper register is easy to push sharp — the dial will show you by how much.
  • Find the range of your lip. Sound a note, then deliberately roll the reed in and out to its limits and read the extremes. Knowing you have, say, seventy cents of movement available on that note is what turns a microtone from a hope into a target.
  • Re-check after twenty minutes. The air column warms up and the pitch rises. That is physics, not the reed drying.

Why a chromatic dial can measure a makam but cannot judge one

The dial names the nearest of twelve notes and tells you how far from it you are sitting. For a ney that is genuinely useful, because “the note below, 45 cents sharp” is a precise description of where your finger and lip have landed.

What it cannot do is tell you whether that is right. Turkish makam does not use twelve notes an octave; its theory counts in commas, and its neutral degrees sit where no semitone does. And the theory itself is not what players do — the gap between the codified system and measured performance is largest precisely on the degrees a ney is used to shape. Two jobs the dial does genuinely well. The first is identifying the ney in your hands: play the lowest note you can sound with everything covered, read what the dial says, and you know which instrument you own — useful when you have inherited one, bought one secondhand, or been handed one at a lesson. The second is measuring your own intonation, which on a ney is the whole game: the pitch of any given fingering moves by more than a semitone with the angle of the reed against your lip, so "am I sharp" is a question about you and the dial can answer it.

My ney reads a long way from any note. Is it broken?

Almost certainly not. Two ordinary explanations come before "faulty". Reed is a natural material cut by hand and a ney is not built to concert pitch in the first place — it is built to a length, and the pitch follows. And your embouchure moves the note enormously: the reed is held against the lip at an angle and rolling it in or out is worth well over a semitone, which is not a flaw but the mechanism the microtones of the makam are produced with. Before deciding anything, get a stable note, hold it, and see whether the reading is steady. A wandering reading is a breath problem, not an instrument problem.

What is an ahenk?

The transposition level a Turkish ensemble is playing at. Turkish art music is written at a fixed nominal pitch — the note called rast is written as G — and it sounds at whatever level the ney in the room dictates, because the ney cannot transpose and everything else can. The levels are named after ney lengths: bolahenk, süpürde, müstahsen, kız, mansur, şah, davud, plus the shorter nısfiye halves. So an ensemble does not transpose a piece, it picks an ahenk and everybody follows the ney.

Why does this page not print the pitch of each ahenk?

Because the tables in circulation disagree with each other, and we have not checked one against a primary source. They differ about which level is the non-transposing one and about whether şah puts rast at F or F sharp — differences of a semitone, which is not a rounding error. Rather than pick one and present it as settled, this page gives you the reliable method instead: play your lowest note into the dial and find out what your ney actually is. That answer is true regardless of which table you later consult.

My ney plays sharp when I have been playing for a while.

That is the air column warming up, and every wind instrument does it — the speed of sound in air rises with temperature, so the pitch rises with it. It is not the reed drying or the holes changing. A ney will be noticeably sharper twenty minutes into a session than it was cold, which matters if you are playing with fixed-pitch instruments and matters not at all if you are playing with other neys warming at the same rate.
