Can a kalimba play Mary Had a Little Lamb?
Yes β every size on this page plays it. The check is made note by note against what each one can actually sound. Where the tune does not fit as the library writes it, another key or octave is tried, and the table says which; where nothing fits, it names the notes that are missing.

What to expect on a kalimba
- It runs from C4 to G4, a fifth, using 4 different notes. Its lowest note is the lowest this instrument has, and 21 semitones of range are left above it.
- 92% of its moves are a step or a repeated note. The widest is a minor third, E4 to G4, at note 12.
- The left thumb plays 10 notes and the right 13, with 3 on the centre tine. 2 times one thumb plays two different tines in a row β those are the spots to slow down for.
- The furthest it reaches from the centre is the 2nd tine out.
About the tune
The poem is by Sarah Josepha Hale, published in Boston in 1830; the hymn composer Lowell Mason set it to this tune the following year. In 1877 Thomas Edison recited its opening lines to test his phonograph, which makes it the first verse ever recorded and played back.
